How to access the Trail Database, Map and GPX files

There is a Map page on the main site, but that is primarily the Barrier maps, because we think those are still important.

Our "Trail Data" database contains many more maps, gpx files and data sheets on each trail we know of.

NOTE: You must register as a forum user to access this database. It is quick and easy.

This data is arranged by region. Northwest, Northeast and so on.  Of course, all west side trails are accessed by Kistler Memorial Highway and most east side trails are accessed by FR210. In the "Trails and Trail Data" section of the Forums, click on a region, and you'll find a "sticky" message at the top in the format of  "Northeast Trail Data". Opening that you will find a list of links. The top one will take you straight to a map and gpx index.  The second is a search form for the trail database.  Under those two are links for the data sheets for each trail in that region.  Maps, gpx files and some photos are also linked from each data sheet.

Can I download/upload gpx files to my Garmin GPS/Topo US software for use on my upcoming trip?  Will these gpx files also show the "breadcrumb" trail or just the waypoints.  How would I go about this if this is possible.  I have already manually entered the waypoints that I would be interested in using on my trip, but am just curious about my earlier questions.

Kenneth'll reply before you know it but just a quick answer for you. The master file contains the way points and the tracks (bread crumbs as you referred to them). Once you have the tracks downloaded and opened in Mapsource you'll need to sort what you need. Your GPSr has only so much track capacity and memory overall. I manage my personal files for upload as separate files but I still maintain Ken's masterfile on my PC. Any Topo maps you load are additional data and separate from the data base.

You'll manage the data base from your Mapsource program for loading to your Garmin. Your manual should give you the particulars on capacity ... for example the Garmin 60CSx has a maximum waypoint capacity of 1000 waypoints, 20 saved tracks maximum and 10,000 points total. You can save tracks from the GPSr to a memory card if your unit is one of those that support the micro SD's but you can't use the data saved as a track to the card on the unit. You can use it on your PC after download. Check your manual for the set up on that. Routes on the 60CSx are max'd at 50 saved.

I think Michael about covered it.  If you're using Mapsource, it will open the gpx file.
What I do then is copy and paste the tracks I want in my gps to another instance of
mapsource (you can open more than one copy). Then you can transfer those to the gps.
You can do the same if you just want some of the waypoints, or you can transfer all
the waypoints at once.

The gpx file is simply tracks and waypoints. They should all show up on your maps in mapsource
or any number of other programs designed for use with gps.  Let us know if you need more
help.

I have a Garmin Etrex Venture HC.  I also have my entire track stored from MST Connector/Gate, MST, Cambric, LGT, to MST Connector.  My trip summary is on Yahoo's Linville Group.  I noticed you are looking for this track.  How do I send it to you?

OK, I'm registered and I've been all over this site, and I cannot find any link to any maps or trail database.  What am I doing wrong?  Where are the maps?

Go to the bottom boards where the gorge is divided into regions. There are stickies at the top with links to the master map and the trail database. The mastermap is the primary map,but there are some area maps linked in the trail data sheets.
